Prostate radiation therapy has advanced tremendously in the past years. At Jefferson Radiation Oncology, we employ Image-Guided Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IG-IMRT), the most sophisticated form of radiation therapy routinely for our patients with prostate cancer.
Already, IMRT has revolutionized outcomes for prostate cancer patients, allowing higher and more effective doses while minimizing side effects. Image-guided IMRT is an excellent way to treat prostate cancer. It is safe, effective, non-invasive and done entirely as an outpatient. Patients are generally able to work and carry on all their normal activities. We use Image-guided IMRT, meaning that the radiation field hones directly to the where your prostate is every time. This takes the uncertainly out of the treatment and allows us to shrink the margins, minimizing the dose that goes to surrounding healthy tissues such as the bladder and the rectum.
This accuracy is achieved by having our treatment machines detect special markers implanted within the prostate. These are placed by your urologist before the start of your course of radiation therapy. This technology offers greater efficiency, with higher control than was achieved before, with even fewer side effects. Our department has a very active prostate brachytherapy program to ensure that we offer each of our patients the most effective treatment for their situation. We offer both Prostate Seed Implants and Prostate High-Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy.
