Gastrointestinal

Radiation therapy is commonly used to treat many types of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer including esophagus, stomach, pancreatic, colon and rectal malignancies. Often patients with GI cancer suffer from weight loss, anorexia, and malnutrition due to their cancer. Particular attention must be paid to the patient's nutrition and hydration status. Our department has a busy rectal cancer practice, collaborating with surgeons and medical oncologists to offer multi-modality therapy. The addition of radiation therapy in GI cancer treatments has been shown to reduce pelvic tumor recurrence and can lead to higher rates of sphincter sparing in certain cases.
